Major Settlement Reached for Ultratech Cement Contract Workers

A significant breakthrough has been achieved in an ongoing industrial dispute at Ultratech Cement Works Plant in Baga, Himachal Pradesh. The Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Chandigarh, facilitated successful negotiations that culminated in a resolution on July 10, 2026. This agreement not only aims to improve the working conditions of around 284 contract workers but also promises to safeguard long-term industrial harmony at the facility.

The newly formed settlement entails a financial commitment of approximately ₹15 crore over the next five years. Among the key benefits outlined in the agreement is a substantial wage increase of ₹6,000 per month for the workforce in the first year. Additionally, workers will see enhancements in their promotion policies, the provision of woolen jackets, and assurances of timely payment of statutory bonuses, collectively fostering a better work environment.

Successful Conciliation Efforts

The resolution was achieved after extensive discussions and conciliation led by the labour department. These efforts raised awareness among management regarding their statutory welfare obligations and the importance of fair working conditions. Throughout the discussions, the need for constructive dialogue and timely implementation of welfare measures was made clear. Management representatives committed to uphold their responsibilities toward employee welfare and to comply with relevant labour laws.

Collaborative Approach

This landmark settlement was reached with active participation from key stakeholders. The management’s representative, the Assistant Vice President (HR) of Ultratech Cement Works, played a crucial role alongside the General Secretaries of the Lal Jhanda Cement Plant Workers Union (CITU) and Ultratech Cement Kamgar Sangh (BMS). Their collective efforts were instrumental in crafting an agreement that addresses the pressing needs of the workforce.

The resolution marks an encouraging development for contract workers at Ultratech Cement and sets a positive precedent for the management-labour relationship. As the Industrial Relations climate improves through this agreement, both parties aim to work towards sustainable operational practices and the welfare of all employees.
