Vikram-1 Launch: India’s Private Space Industry Takes Flight

India has officially entered the global space race with the successful launch of Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. This landmark achievement not only elevates India’s status in the burgeoning space economy but also validates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategic decision to invite private participation in the nation’s space sector, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology.

Witnessing the launch at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Dr. Singh celebrated the successful placement of Vikram-1 into low Earth orbit by Skyroot Aerospace. The company has made history by becoming the first Indian private firm to execute an orbital launch from Indian soil, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s journey into space.

Prime Minister Modi extended his congratulations to the Skyroot Aerospace team, calling their achievement a reflection of India’s growing scientific prowess and innovative capabilities. He described Vikram-1’s launch as a proud milestone for the expanding Indian space ecosystem.

Dr. Singh commended the founders of Skyroot Aerospace, Pawan Kumar Chandana and Bharath Daka, emphasizing that without Modi’s groundbreaking reforms to open the space sector to private enterprises, such accomplishments could not have been possible. He noted that these reforms have unleashed the potential of Indian innovators, giving them access to essential national infrastructure and fostering an environment ripe for developing world-class technologies.

Skyroot’s success is indicative of a collaborative spirit among various organizations, including ISRO and IN-SPACe, which have established a seamless public-private partnership framework that is revitalizing India’s space ecosystem. This partnership enables innovative initiatives that can compete on a global scale, demonstrating how policy innovations can catalyze technological advancements.

Reflecting on his long association with the Skyroot team, Dr. Singh praised their technological confidence and creativity. He remarked that today’s achievement is the culmination of years of hard work, scientific rigor, and the determination of young Indian entrepreneurs to build a competitive space industry.

Vikram-1, designed to carry up to 350 kilograms into low Earth orbit, showcases impressive technological advancements, including India’s first all-carbon composite rocket and a fully 3D-printed liquid engine. The mission effectively validated critical systems for propulsion, telemetry, navigation, and flight control, laying a robust foundation for future commercial launches.

Dr. Singh highlighted the transformation of India’s space sector since the reforms initiated in 2020. From virtually no private launch ecosystem, India now boasts over 400 space start-ups and is rapidly approaching a space economy worth USD 9 billion, with aspirations to reach nearly USD 44 billion within the next decade. The successful launch of Vikram-1 exemplifies how effective policies can foster innovation and position India as a key player in the space sector.

According to Dr. Singh, the successful launch of Vikram-1 signifies the dawn of a new era in which Indian innovation, backed by reformative policies and robust public-private cooperation, will increasingly influence the global space economy. “For India, the sky is no longer the limit,” he asserted confidently.
