India Surpasses Goal with 11 Crore Farmer IDs Ahead of Schedule

In a significant advancement for digital agriculture, the Government of India has successfully created 11 crore Farmer IDs, achieving this milestone five months ahead of the scheduled deadline of March 31, 2027. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, hailed this accomplishment as a pivotal step toward fulfilling Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of an economically prosperous India supported by thriving farmers. This initiative is part of the Digital Agriculture Mission rolled out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

The Farmer ID initiative provides farmers with a unique digital identity that facilitates efficient, transparent access to essential government schemes such as bank credit, crop insurance, and disaster relief while significantly reducing paperwork and the need for repeated verification.

Milestone Achieved in Record Time

Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the 11 crore Farmer IDs were finalized by the night of October 23. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, along with state governments and field-level officials, collaborated effectively to reach this target well ahead of the deadline. He extended his congratulations to farmers nationwide, emphasizing that the Farmer ID represents a vital digital identity, enhancing the efficacy and transparency of agricultural practices through modern technology.

Simplifying Access to Benefits

The Farmer ID system aims to greatly ease the burden on farmers, who previously had to visit government offices and banks multiple times or submit redundant documents for accessing various benefits. With this new system, the process of obtaining bank loans and Kisan Credit Cards will be streamlined, minimizing the necessity for repeated document verification.

Moreover, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, which provides compensation for crop losses due to natural disasters, will now ensure that payments are directly transferred into farmers’ bank accounts through a more transparent process. Disaster relief assistance will also be expedited, allowing farmers to receive help quickly during emergencies. Additionally, by utilizing a digital system for crop procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP), intermediaries will be eliminated, ensuring that farmers receive the entire value for their produce.

Significant Benefits Already Realized

Since the launch of the Digital Agriculture Mission on September 2, 2024, the initiative has started showing tangible results. Over 6 crore farmers have already benefitted from various schemes facilitated by the Farmer ID-based service delivery system. By linking a verified farmer database to agricultural services, the initiative aims to mitigate fraud and reduce the need for duplicate verification, thus improving inter-departmental coordination and enhancing the monitoring of government schemes.

A Model of Cooperative Federalism

Shri Chouhan acknowledged the collective efforts of both the Central and state governments that contributed to this achievement, describing it as an exceptional model of cooperative federalism. He expressed gratitude to the officials at all levels, especially those working in rural areas, for their invaluable role in achieving this target ahead of time. States and Union Territories are also taking specific measures to ensure that tenant farmers and actual cultivators are included in the digital initiative, guaranteeing that no eligible farmer misses out on government support programs.

Embracing Technology for a Brighter Future

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the Farmer Registry in alignment with the principle of Minimum Government, Maximum Governance. The Farmer ID is more than just a digital identity; it serves as a foundation for a more transparent and farmer-centric governance system. By establishing a verified digital identity for farmers, the goal is to enhance the delivery of agricultural services and ensure that government benefits reach the intended recipients efficiently. Shri Chouhan encouraged farmers to harness modern technology and utilize the benefits available to them to elevate Indian agriculture to new heights, marking a significant stride toward the development of a cutting-edge agricultural ecosystem.
