HDFC Bank Investigation Reveals Executive Leaks of Confidential Information, According to Report

NEW DELHI: HDFC Bank has uncovered evidence that two senior executives shared confidential business plans and potentially market-sensitive information with outsiders, according to a Bloomberg report. The investigation was initiated after concerns about possible leaks were raised by some bank leaders. The executives, who manage key business areas, have been identified, and the bank is currently assessing whether the information was misused.

The findings were communicated to senior management and some board members earlier this year. Both executives have been formally notified of the investigation’s results, but the bank has not disclosed what actions will be taken against them. An HDFC Bank spokesperson confirmed that an internal review is ongoing but refrained from commenting on specific findings or the individuals involved. The spokesperson stated, “In line with our policies, an internal review into this matter is currently underway to gather and evaluate all relevant facts. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, once the review is complete.” The bank emphasized its commitment to high standards of ethics and governance.

HDFC Bank faces scrutiny as leadership transition approaches

This investigation coincides with a leadership transition at HDFC Bank, which has recently experienced boardroom disputes and senior management departures. Valued at approximately $115 billion, HDFC Bank is India’s largest bank by market capitalization and has built a reputation for conservative management and strong internal controls over three decades. However, its share price has fallen about 28% this year.

Anup Bagchi, a veteran from rival ICICI Group, is set to become the bank’s chief executive on October 27, marking the first time an outsider will hold the position. This transition follows the unexpected decision of incumbent CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to step down after six years. Additionally, Kaizad Bharucha, deputy managing director and one of the bank’s longest-serving executives, has requested to leave at the end of December. The findings from the internal probe add to the challenges facing HDFC Bank as it navigates this leadership change. Recent months have also seen public internal disagreements, including the abrupt resignation of then-chairman Atanu Chakraborty in March, who cited conflicts between his personal values and certain practices at the bank. An independent legal review commissioned by HDFC Bank later determined that Chakraborty’s concerns were not substantiated.
