SBI Data Breach: Thousands of Customer Records Discovered on Dark Web
NEW DELHI: The State Bank of India (SBI) has identified 3,897 customer records containing personally identifiable information (PII) that may have been exposed on the dark web. The bank is conducting a thorough investigation to verify the authenticity, source, and extent of this exposure. Alerts regarding the potential breach were received on October 16 from its Threat Intelligence Service Provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and CERT-In.
SBI’s preliminary analysis of around 375,000 records found that the exposed data includes customers’ registered mobile numbers, dates of birth, names, gender, email addresses, residential addresses, branch and customer information file (CIF) identifiers, lead IDs, and metadata related to loan records. The bank has activated its cyber incident response protocols and engaged an independent cybersecurity agency to assess the situation.
Data Contents and Investigation
The ongoing investigation will determine the authenticity and completeness of the exposed data, as well as the potential source and risks associated with the incident. SBI has stated that it is implementing appropriate remedial and preventive measures as needed. The bank clarified that the incident has not materially impacted its core business operations or financial performance.
Hacker Group’s Claim
The bank’s announcement follows a claim by an unidentified hacker group named ‘Siriusim,’ which alleges to have obtained confidential customer information linked to SBI. This claim was highlighted by the cybersecurity monitoring account CyberPulse56, which reported that the group purportedly possesses around 380,000 data entries in CSV format and 2,722 PDF documents related to the bank. The dataset reportedly includes personal information, residential addresses, loan applications, and supporting documents.
CyberPulse56 warned that the exposed information could be exploited for identity theft, financial fraud, and targeted phishing attacks. SBI has assured that it will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary measures in line with regulatory requirements. The bank emphasized that its core functions remain unaffected and are operating normally.
