IMA Calls for Review of Sunny Deol’s ‘Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak’ Over Doctor and Hospital Violence Concerns

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has voiced strong objections to the promotional material for Sunny Deol’s upcoming crime drama, Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak. The association is particularly concerned about how the film portrays the medical profession, questioning whether its depiction of alleged corruption and violence against healthcare workers could negatively influence public perception of doctors and hospital staff.

In a formal letter, the IMA outlined four primary areas of concern. These include the generalization of alleged misconduct within the medical community, the portrayal of physical assaults on healthcare workers, the safety of medical personnel, and the potential impact on the trust between doctors and patients.

Concerns Over Generalization and Violence

The IMA cautioned against the film’s tendency to portray individual instances of wrongdoing in a way that reflects poorly on the entire medical community. They stated, “The portrayal risks creating the impression that corruption, unethical practices, and alleged corruption in medical fraternity. While individual misconduct must be investigated and punished, the actions of a few must not be used to tarnish the reputation of countless honest and dedicated doctors.”

The association also expressed alarm over scenes that depict physical confrontations in medical settings, especially if these actions are framed as justified. The IMA warned, “Scenes depicting physical assaults on doctors, nursing staff, and hospital personnel, particularly when presented as heroic or justified acts, risk normalising violence against those committed to saving lives.”

Safety and Trust Issues

Highlighting the safety challenges faced by healthcare workers, the IMA noted, “Doctors and healthcare personnel already face serious safety challenges in hospitals. Content that appears to glorify attacks on medical professionals may encourage hostility and further endanger those providing essential healthcare services.”

The organization further emphasized that such portrayals could undermine public confidence in medical professionals. They stated, “Such portrayals may foster unwarranted mistrust and hostility towards doctors, weakening the mutual trust and cooperation essential for effective treatment and healthcare delivery.”

Request for Review and Corrective Measures

While expressing its objections, the IMA clarified that it does not condone unethical medical practices and believes that individual cases of misconduct should be addressed through appropriate channels. They argued that these instances should not lead to broad portrayals that could tarnish the profession’s reputation or deter future medical students.

In light of their concerns, the IMA has requested an impartial review of the film’s content. They are seeking corrective measures to address the generalization of alleged misconduct and the depiction of violence against healthcare workers. The association stated, “In view of these concerns, we respectfully request… [an] impartial review of the film’s content and its portrayal of the medical profession; seek appropriate corrective measures from the filmmakers to address the generalisation of alleged misconduct and the depiction of violence against healthcare workers; [and] consider a ban or other appropriate action if justified under applicable law.”

Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak, directed by M. Padmakumar in his Hindi directorial debut, is an official remake of the 2018 Malayalam crime thriller Joseph. The film features Sunny Deol as a retired police officer investigating disturbing revelations about medical malpractice and systemic corruption following a personal tragedy. The supporting cast includes Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Manish Wadhwa, and Jisshu Sengupta. Scheduled for theatrical release on November 20, 2026, the IMA’s objections have drawn attention to the film’s portrayal of healthcare workers ahead of its debut.
