DRI Foils Major Gold Smuggling Attempt Along Indo-Bangladesh Border

In a remarkable operation to curb organized gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully seized around 8.3 kg of foreign-origin gold, valued at approximately ₹12.37 crore, along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Authorities apprehended four suspects linked to these illicit activities, demonstrating DRI’s ongoing commitment to dismantling smuggling networks.
On October 5, 2026, DRI officials conducted an intelligence-led surveillance operation in the Cooch Behar District. They intercepted four individuals traveling on two motorcycles on their way from the Indo-Bangladesh border at Chowdhurihat to Cooch Behar. During a personal search of the suspects, agents uncovered gold biscuits carefully concealed in specialized cloth waist belts worn by two of the suspects.
Significant Seizure and Arrests
The operation resulted in the recovery of a total of 72 gold biscuits, each weighing 116 grams. This brings the total weight of the seized foreign-origin gold to approximately 8.3 kg, with a combined value nearing ₹12.37 crore. The authorities executed the operation under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act of 1962 and arrested all four individuals involved. Investigations are ongoing as DRI delves deeper into the smuggling incident.
Commitment to Dismantling Smuggling Networks
This operation is part of DRI’s larger strategy to conduct sustained surveillance and enforcement actions against the organized gold smuggling syndicates operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border. DRI aims to identify and dismantle the broader networks that facilitate the movement and distribution of smuggled gold. The successful interception and seizure highlight the agency’s relentless efforts to safeguard the country’s economy and uphold customs regulations.
The DRI’s proactive approach and the recent seizure further emphasize the importance of continued vigilance in combating organized crime at national borders. As investigations proceed, authorities remain focused on addressing the illicit trade of gold and disrupting the operations of smuggling rings.
