India Extends Export Support Amid Geopolitical Tensions
In response to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and their effects on maritime logistics in the Gulf region, the Department of Commerce has announced an extension of timelines under the Component II of the RELIEF scheme. This decision, made through Notification No.37/2026-27 on September 30, 2026, aims to boost export resilience through targeted support for Indian exporters.
The RELIEF scheme, which stands for Resilience & Logistics Intervention for Export Facilitation, encourages exporters to obtain coverage from the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) for upcoming shipments to vulnerable regions. Exporters are now able to procure 95% risk coverage through this intervention, effective for Stand Alone Policies or Whole Turnover Policies purchased on or after March 16, 2026.
Under Component II, a variety of cargo types are eligible for benefits, including Full Container Load (FCL), Less than Container Load (LCL), and Reefer containers, although energy shipments are excluded. Notably, the initiative ensures that the insurance premium paid by exporters will not exceed the levels that existed prior to the disruptions, providing much-needed financial relief.
The RELIEF scheme was originally introduced on March 19, 2026, as a direct response to the soaring freight costs and increased insurance premiums linked to war-related risks affecting exports, particularly in the Gulf and wider West Asia maritime corridor. With tensions impacting trade flows, the government’s latest extension demonstrates its commitment to sustaining support for exporters navigating these challenging conditions.
As the global trade environment continues to evolve amid geopolitical instability, the government seeks to ensure that Indian exporters remain competitive and resilient. The announcement promises to offer a safety net for businesses affected by unexpected disruptions, fostering a stable exporting landscape while maintaining valuable trade relations.
By offering these critical extensions and risk mitigations, the Government of India signals its dedication to not only protecting domestic exporters but also to promoting overall trade growth during uncertain times.
