Private Equity Firms Target Experience-Driven Consumer Trends

MUMBAI: Private equity firms are increasingly investing in India’s events and experiences economy, with notable examples including KKR’s investment in BookMyShow and Blackstone’s stake in an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. Young consumers are driving this trend, allocating significant portions of their budgets to experiences rather than material goods. Analysts at EY noted that Travis Scott’s concert in Delhi sold nearly 100,000 tickets in minutes, reflecting a rapid expenditure of around Rs 100 crore on live entertainment.

Shifting Consumer Preferences

The shift towards prioritizing experiences over possessions is reshaping consumption patterns, particularly among younger demographics. Vikram Kumaraswamy, a partner at L Catterton, emphasized that the consumption habits of today’s youth differ markedly from those of previous generations. KPMG estimates indicate that the local live events and entertainment market will reach Rs 13,600 crore by 2025. IPL ticket sales have surged from approximately Rs 120 crore in 2008 to an estimated Rs 500 crore in 2025, according to data from Houlihan Lokey.

The commercial sports economy, encompassing media rights, endorsements, sponsorships, and franchise revenues, is projected to be valued at Rs 18,864 crore. Sameer Jindal, Managing Director at Houlihan Lokey, pointed out that in a landscape dominated by AI and digital consumption, live sports and fitness represent unique experiential assets that attract institutional private equity investment. This real-world emotional engagement offers pricing power and resilience against digital distractions.

Investment Opportunities in Experience-Driven Businesses

The recent 350% return on investment by CVC from selling a majority stake in Gujarat Titans to Torrent Group has sparked renewed interest in IPL among private equity investors. Narendra Ostawal, Managing Director and head of India PE at Warburg Pincus, noted the changing demographics and social media’s impact on consumer behavior, urging investors to seek opportunities that align with this growth.

Businesses focused on delivering experiences are expected to outperform. Companies involved in product offerings are also looking to connect their brands with experiential marketing. Kumaraswamy mentioned that brands could promote healthy snacks during sports events, while L Catterton plans to invest in ventures centered on enhancing home experiences, travel, and fitness. However, he cautioned that the returns profile for new businesses can be complex, with high consumer acquisition costs necessitating sustainable growth strategies.
