Cabinet Approves Four Railway Multitracking Projects Across Four States
The Union Cabinet has approved five major infrastructure projects totaling Rs 13,041 crore, which include four railway multitracking initiatives and the four-laning of an 82.6-km stretch of NH-22 in Bihar. The railway projects will cost Rs 9,450 crore, while the highway upgrade will require Rs 3,590.73 crore. These developments aim to enhance connectivity, ease congestion, and facilitate the movement of goods and passengers across various regions.
Railway Projects to Enhance Connectivity
The four railway projects approved will add approximately 410 km to the Indian Railways network, impacting eight districts in West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. These initiatives are expected to connect 6,448 villages, benefiting a population of around 60 lakh. The projects will also enable an additional 76 million tonnes of freight traffic annually, improving logistics efficiency.
The specific railway projects include the Kharagpur-Bhadrak 4th line, spanning 173 km at a cost of Rs 3,352 crore; the Bhadrak-Haridaspur 4th line, covering 75 km for Rs 1,583 crore; the Gummidipundi-Gudur 3rd and 4th lines, totaling 90 km at Rs 2,229 crore; and the Cuttack-Paradeep 3rd and 4th lines, measuring 72 km at Rs 2,286 crore. These projects are scheduled for completion by 2030-31.
Highway Project to Connect Bihar with Nepal
The Cabinet also approved the upgrade of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of NH-22 to four-lane standards. This 82.578-km project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total cost of Rs 3,590.73 crore. The upgraded highway will connect the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa with Muzaffarpur and NH-27, which is part of the East-West Corridor.
The project aims to alleviate congestion in densely populated areas, including Muzaffarpur and surrounding towns. Designed for a maximum speed of 100 kmph, the highway will feature seven major bridges and several overpasses to enhance safety and efficiency. The upgraded corridor is expected to improve access to key economic nodes and cultural destinations, supporting regional growth and connectivity.
