India Unveils Sixth Indigenisation List for Defence Production
The Department of Defence Production (DDP) has announced its sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL), which includes 405 strategically significant items with an estimated business potential of Rs 3,070 crore. This list is a key part of the Indian government’s initiative to promote self-reliance in defence manufacturing, aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on imported defence equipment.
Details of the New Indigenisation List
The newly notified items consist of Line Replaceable Units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components, and raw materials. Notably, the list features 16 items from the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and a substantial 389 items linked with Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). This wide-ranging assortment spans various essential defence platforms, including:
- Air platforms such as the Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Utility Helicopter, Su-30MKI, Light Combat Aircraft, and the AL-31FP Engine.
- Armoured platforms including the T-72, T-90 tanks, and BMP-II infantry vehicles.
- Warships.
- Missile systems like the Konkurs-M, Invar, and MRSAM.
- Defence electronics comprising radars, sonars, fire control systems, and satellite communication systems.
- High Explosive Anti-Tank ammunition and other critical defence equipment.
Indigenisation Goals and Strategy
The DDP’s initiative encourages indigenous development, and each item listed comes with a proposed timeline for its indigenisation. Upon successful development, these items will be procured from the domestic industry. The defence sector aims to use various approaches for this indigenisation, including the ‘Make’ procedure and in-house development, involving significant participation from the industry, particularly from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Boosting Domestic Defence Manufacturing
This latest PIL is part of the government’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to enhance self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing. It is anticipated to generate further opportunities for the Indian industry, bolster the domestic manufacturing ecosystem, stimulate investment and innovation, and significantly curtail reliance on imports.
SRIJAN Portal’s Role in Indigenisation
Launched in August 2020, the SRIJAN Defence Portal serves as a vital platform for DPSUs and Service Headquarters (SHQs) to offer various defence items for indigenous development and production. Since its inception, the portal has facilitated over 33,000 defence items for indigenisation. This includes 5,012 items previously notified under the first five Positive Indigenisation Lists.
Over the past five years, more than 15,700 defence items have been successfully indigenised, resulting in an estimated import substitution value of about Rs 9,000 crore. Additionally, up to March 2026, DPSUs have placed procurement orders, including in-house production, amounting to approximately Rs 10,000 crore with domestic vendors.
