Indian Rupee Banknotes Surpass Dollar and Euro in Circulation

MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that there are currently three times as many rupee banknotes in circulation as US dollar bills, and nearly six times as many compared to euro notes. RBI Deputy Governor Shirish Chandra Murmu made this statement during a keynote address at a cash management conference in Jakarta on August 13. As of now, India has 176 billion banknotes in circulation, while the US has approximately 56 billion dollar bills and the eurozone has around 30 billion euro banknotes.

RBI’s Currency Management Strategy

Murmu explained that the number of banknotes in circulation is influenced by various factors, including GDP growth, inflation, and interest rates. To manage the cost of currency, the RBI is extending the lifespan of banknotes by utilizing polymer materials. The central bank produces between 28 billion and 30 billion banknotes annually across six denominations, while disposing of about 21 billion pieces each year.

The largest share of banknotes in circulation is held by ₹500 notes, which account for 7.26 lakh lakh pieces valued at ₹36.29 lakh crore as of August 7, 2026. Murmu noted that India’s denomination mix is skewed towards lower-value notes, necessitating a higher number of pieces for transactions of equivalent value. He emphasized the logistical challenges involved in managing such a vast volume of currency.

Trends in Currency Demand

The RBI projects currency demand five years into the future, distinguishing between transactional and replacement demand. Transactional demand is influenced by anticipated changes in currency circulation, GDP growth, interest rates, food inflation, and the rise of digital payments. Conversely, replacement demand arises from the need to withdraw old and unfit notes.

Despite the growth of digital payment systems, cash usage continues to rise. Murmu referred to this phenomenon as a “cash paradox,” where currency in circulation grows at double-digit rates even as cash’s share of individual transactions declines. The RBI operates four currency printing presses and manages a network of 19 regional offices, currency chests, and over 250,000 ATMs to distribute currency effectively.
