Trump Administration Officials Hold Over $100 Million in Wealth, Outpacing Previous Leaders in High-Value Appointments

US President Donald Trump has appointed a record number of ultra-wealthy officials during his administration. A report from consumer advocacy group Public Citizen reveals that Trump has named more than four times as many officials with fortunes exceeding $100 million compared to the previous three presidents combined. This trend reflects Trump’s preference for wealthy appointees, despite his electoral support from middle-income and working-class voters.

Scale of Wealth

The report highlights the significant concentration of wealth within Trump’s administration. A total of 57 officials are estimated to have fortunes of at least $100 million, including 17 ambassadors and 40 senior executive branch officials. Notably, eight of the 23 members of Trump’s Cabinet fall into this category, with Treasury Secretary Howard Lutnick and Education Secretary Linda McMahon both being billionaires.

Historically, presidents have sought advice from wealthy Americans and appointed them to key positions. The report cites Andrew Mellon, a prominent figure in the 1920s, as a notable example of a wealthy individual serving in a high government role. Among Trump’s wealthy officials are Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg and Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler, both billionaires. The report also mentions Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and special envoy Steve Witkoff, who are estimated to be worth hundreds of millions.

The contrast with previous administrations is stark. Both George W. Bush and Joe Biden had five officials each with wealth exceeding $100 million, while Barack Obama’s administration had three. Public Citizen’s report raises concerns about the implications of such a wealthy government, suggesting that it could lead to misplaced incentives and corruption. Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, questioned whose interests these ultra-rich officials are truly serving. The report does not include Trump himself, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes to be over $6 billion, nor does it account for Elon Musk, the world’s richest person.
