Coriander Prices Surge Above Rs 200 per Kg as Heavy Rains Disrupt Supply
Fresh coriander prices have surged dramatically, now exceeding Rs 200 per kg, following heavy rainfall that disrupted supplies from key growing regions. Once considered a complimentary item at vegetable stalls, coriander has transformed into a costly kitchen staple. The price spike is attributed to flooding in Nashik, Maharashtra, a major source of green coriander for northern India.
Supply Chain Disruptions
The intense rainfall at the end of July severely damaged standing crops and hindered transportation, leading to a significant reduction in the supply of coriander. Traders reported that weather-related disruptions have caused sharp fluctuations in prices throughout the week. At Delhi’s Azadpur mandi, fresh coriander prices reached Rs 175 per kg, with retail rates climbing to Rs 220-230 per kg.
Mukesh Kumar, a vegetable trader at Azadpur mandi, noted that wholesale prices typically hover around Rs 25 per kg during this time of year. However, they briefly spiked to Rs 200 per kg before settling around Rs 110 per kg. A month ago, good-quality green coriander was already in short supply, pushing local prices in Nashik to nearly Rs 130 per kg.
Crop Damage and Quality Concerns
Krushna Borade, a vegetable trader and exporter from Nashik, indicated that the recent heavy rains caused extensive damage to coriander crops across multiple regions. This has made it increasingly difficult to procure premium-quality produce, particularly varieties that can withstand long-distance transportation to markets like Delhi.
While Karnataka has partially filled the supply gap, arrivals remain limited, and the quality of the produce is generally inferior. Coriander harvested in Nashik is typically sent to cold-storage facilities in Indore before reaching Delhi, making the supply chain vulnerable to interruptions from heavy rain. Aniket Kapadi, a coriander trader from Nashik, remarked that predicting prices for leafy greens during the rainy season is challenging, as they can fluctuate significantly with delays in arrival.
