Wall Street Approaches Record High Amidst Easing Inflation and Declining Oil Prices
US stock markets approached record highs on Thursday, buoyed by easing inflation data and a decline in oil prices. The S&P 500 rose 0.8%, positioning it to surpass its previous record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 185 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq Composite increased by 1% as of 10:15 a.m. Eastern time.
Inflation Moderates
Investor sentiment improved following government data indicating that wholesale prices in the U.S. rose 4.7% year-over-year. This figure, while still elevated, marked a decrease from June’s 5.5% and fell slightly below economists’ expectations. The moderation in inflation could provide the Federal Reserve with the flexibility to delay interest rate hikes.
The latest wholesale inflation figures, released a day after softer consumer inflation data, have lowered expectations for an imminent rate increase. According to CME Group data, traders now estimate a 35% probability of a rate hike at the Fed’s September meeting, down from approximately 50% just two days prior. If the Fed does raise rates, it would be the first increase in over three years.
Oil Prices Drop
Oil prices also fell on Thursday, alleviating some inflation concerns. Brent crude dropped 3.3% to $86.02 a barrel. The volatility in oil prices has been significant, with Brent fluctuating between $72 and $102 a barrel in the past month due to shifting expectations regarding the resolution of conflicts in the Middle East.
On Wall Street, real estate stocks performed well, benefiting from falling interest rates and lower bond yields, which enhance the appeal of dividend payouts from real estate investment trusts (REITs). Companies like AvalonBay Communities and Builders FirstSource saw gains of 2.6% and 3.4%, respectively. The decline in oil prices also positively impacted companies with high fuel expenses, such as United Airlines, which rose 1.7%, and Carnival, which added 2.9%.
