July Sees 31.5% Increase in Deficit to $15 Billion as Electronics Exports Soar
India’s trade deficit expanded significantly in July, reaching $15.03 billion, a 31.5% increase from the previous year. The rise was driven by a faster growth in imports compared to exports, with total imports rising 15.8% to $95.16 billion. In contrast, exports of goods and services grew by 13.3%, amounting to $80.14 billion.
Merchandise exports were a key contributor to the overall export growth, surging 19.63% to $44.24 billion. This figure marks the highest recorded for July, surpassing the previous peak of $38.34 billion in 2022. Meanwhile, goods imports also saw a notable increase, climbing 17.52% to $76.22 billion. Services exports were estimated at $35.89 billion, up from $33.74 billion a year earlier, while services imports rose to $18.94 billion from $17.30 billion.
April-July Trade Gap Jumps 52.97%
The widening trade deficit in July is part of a broader trend observed in the first four months of the fiscal year 2026-27. Cumulative exports during this period increased by 13.16% to $316.42 billion, while imports rose 17.28% to $365.85 billion. This resulted in a cumulative trade deficit of $49.43 billion, a significant increase of 52.97% from $32.32 billion in the same period last year.
Merchandise exports for April-July grew by 17.04% to $173.78 billion, but merchandise imports increased at a faster rate of 19.27% to $292.38 billion. Notably, India recorded higher merchandise exports to both China and the US during this period, with exports to China rising to $7.78 billion and shipments to the US reaching $34.49 billion.
Electronics Emerge as Major Export Driver
Recent government data indicates a remarkable growth in India’s electronics manufacturing and exports. Electronics exports surged over 11-fold to Rs 4.24 lakh crore in FY 2025-26. Women constituted nearly 30% of the workforce in the electronics manufacturing sector. The digital economy now contributes up to 14% of GDP, bolstered by initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and the India Semiconductor Mission.
Electronics have become India’s third-largest export category, with exports reaching $47.96 billion in FY 2025. Mobile phones, once the 153rd-largest export item in FY 2014-15, are now the largest export product, with exports increasing 165-fold to Rs 2.59 lakh crore. The sector has generated 12 lakh jobs, with women making up nearly 70% of the workforce in mobile manufacturing.
