SpaceX Shares Decline as Elon Musk’s Company Faces Potential $1 Trillion Market Cap Drop
SpaceX, the aerospace and artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, is facing a significant decline in market capitalization, projected to drop over $1 trillion from its peak. Shares fell sharply on Friday, dropping as much as 6.9% to $122.12 before recovering slightly. This decline brings the company’s market value to approximately $1.61 trillion, down from a high of $2.64 trillion recorded on June 16, according to a Bloomberg report.
Reasons Behind the Decline
The recent drop in SpaceX’s share price is attributed to the company’s decision to abort the launch of its Starship rocket due to an engine issue. SpaceX announced plans for another launch attempt in the coming days. Earlier this month, the company was added to the Nasdaq-100 Index and received positive ratings from analysts, with an average 12-month price target of $235.34.
Concerns about the broader momentum of artificial intelligence-related IPOs have also emerged alongside SpaceX’s stock decline. AI plays a crucial role in SpaceX’s IPO narrative, as the company aims to deploy data centers in space, targeting a total addressable market estimated at $26.5 trillion. Following its record-breaking IPO, Wall Street’s leading investment banks reported their highest revenue from equity offerings in the second quarter since 2021.
Short Selling Activity
Short sellers have capitalized on SpaceX’s stock decline, accumulating an estimated $8.7 billion in unrealized gains since the IPO. Data from analytics firm Ortex Technologies indicates that nearly 49% of SpaceX’s free float is currently on loan, suggesting a significant amount of short selling. Peter Hillerberg, co-founder of Ortex, noted that short sellers have continued to increase their positions as the stock price has fallen from its post-listing high of $225.64 toward the IPO price of $135.
SpaceX’s high market valuation has attracted investors who believe the stock is overpriced. Despite this, strong participation from both retail and institutional investors, along with Elon Musk’s history of confronting short sellers, makes bearish bets on the company a risky endeavor.
