July-September 2026 Small Savings Schemes Interest Rates Revealed

The Finance Ministry has announced that interest rates on post office small savings schemes will remain unchanged for the July-September 2026 quarter. This decision follows a review of rates applicable to various schemes, including the Public Provident Fund (PPF) and Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS). The last adjustment to these rates occurred for the January-March quarter of FY2023-24.

Current Interest Rates for Q2 FY2026-27

The interest rates for the second quarter of FY2026-27, effective from July 1 to September 30, 2026, will mirror those set for the previous quarter. The official notification confirmed that rates across all small savings schemes will not change.

The following are the current interest rates for key small savings instruments:

  • Post Office Savings Account: 4.00% (Annually)
  • 1 Year Time Deposit: 6.9% (Quarterly)
  • 2 Year Time Deposit: 7.0% (Quarterly)
  • 3 Year Time Deposit: 7.1% (Quarterly)
  • 5 Year Time Deposit: 7.5% (Quarterly)
  • Senior Citizen Savings Scheme: 8.2% (Quarterly)
  • Public Provident Fund Scheme: 7.10% (Annually)
  • Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana: 8.20% (Annually)

    Factors Influencing Interest Rates

Experts indicate that several factors influence the interest rates on small savings schemes. The yield on government securities (G-Secs) is a primary driver, as higher bond yields generally lead to increased returns on these savings instruments. Inflation also plays a crucial role, with the government aiming to provide attractive real returns to investors.

Monetary policy decisions by the Reserve Bank of India, particularly changes in the repo rate and liquidity conditions, further affect G-Sec yields. Although a market-linked mechanism determines these rates, experts suggest that the government does not strictly adhere to this formula each quarter. The stability of returns for small savers, especially senior citizens who rely on these schemes for income, is a significant consideration in the decision-making process.
