Crude Prices Decline as US-Iran Agreement Reopens Hormuz After Extended Closure

Oil prices fell sharply in early trading on Thursday following the signing of an interim agreement between the United States and Iran. This deal aims to end the Iran war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and lift U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil. The agreement is viewed as a potential resolution to one of the largest disruptions in global energy supply.

Current Oil Prices

As of 7 am IST, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was priced at $76.10, down 0.90%, while Brent crude was at $78.86, a decrease of 0.87%. This marks a significant drop from Wednesday’s prices, where WTI was at $76.46 and Brent at $79.41. The decline in prices follows the announcement of the peace deal, with both benchmark crude prices falling over 5% since the news broke.

Details of the Agreement

The 14-point memorandum initiates a 60-day negotiation period. During this time, Iran will allow toll-free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil and gas shipments. The agreement also outlines plans to restore traffic through the strait to full capacity within 30 days. However, key issues remain unresolved, including Iran’s nuclear program and the need for a $300 billion financing plan to support Iran’s economic recovery.

Implications of the Deal

U.S. President Trump, while announcing the deal, cautioned that military action could resume if Iran does not adhere to its commitments. He also softened previous justifications for military action, stating it would be “unfair” for Iran not to possess ballistic missiles. The International Energy Agency has warned that if the Strait of Hormuz reopens, the current supply crisis could shift to a surplus by 2027, with global supply potentially exceeding demand by 5.05 million barrels per day next year.

The peace deal follows over four months of conflict, during which the U.S. and Israel conducted joint strikes on Iran, leading to tightened controls over the Strait of Hormuz and increased global energy prices.
