Tata Group Urges Air India to Prioritize Loss Reduction
Air India is set to defer aircraft deliveries, cut flights, and postpone expansion plans as majority owner Tata Group directs the airline to focus on reducing its substantial losses. This shift in strategy marks a significant departure from Air India’s previously ambitious growth plans. The airline has faced numerous challenges, including a fatal crash last year, which have contributed to an annual loss of approximately $3 billion (around Rs 28,500 crore).
The airline is currently negotiating with Airbus and Boeing to slow down the delivery of up to 500 aircraft that were previously ordered. This move aims to alleviate immediate financial pressures by delaying large payments due upon delivery. Additionally, Air India is reassessing its plans to launch new domestic and international routes, including postponing operations at the newly established Noida International Airport.
Air India’s financial difficulties have been exacerbated by various factors, including the closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian carriers, the ongoing conflict in Iran, and rising fuel costs. The depreciation of the Indian rupee has further strained the airline’s finances, as many of its expenses are dollar-denominated. Since Tata Group’s acquisition of Air India in 2022, the focus has shifted towards stabilizing operations and implementing cost-cutting measures, rather than pursuing aggressive growth.
Despite these challenges, an Air India spokesperson stated that the airline remains committed to modernizing its fleet and executing its long-term transformation plan. The airline has reported losses exceeding Rs 55,000 crore ($5.8 billion) since 2022, raising concerns among the board of Tata Trusts, which oversees Tata Sons, the majority stakeholder in Air India.
