Parliamentary Panel Explores Grid Stability and Large-Scale Renewable Energy Integration
New Delhi: The parliamentary consultative committee of the Ministry of Power convened on Tuesday to address the challenges of grid stability amid India’s surging electricity demand and the integration of renewable energy. Chaired by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, the meeting emphasized the urgency of reducing renewable energy curtailment by accelerating transmission projects and enhancing grid resilience.
The discussions centered on developing a robust power grid to support India’s clean energy goals. Minister Lal highlighted the importance of expanding transmission, improving energy storage, and deploying advanced technologies to bolster system stability. The committee also explored strategies for integrating renewable energy and enhancing forecasting capabilities.
India’s peak power demand has surged nearly 40% in the past four years, climbing from 193 GW in 2022 to 270 GW this summer. This increase coincides with a significant rise in renewable energy contributions, as the total installed power generation capacity expanded from approximately 400 GW in 2022 to 538 GW, including 288 GW from non-fossil fuel sources.
However, the rapid growth of renewable energy is facing critical challenges due to delays in transmission infrastructure, leading to substantial curtailment of green power. Industry experts have identified the gap between renewable deployment and transmission readiness as a major operational risk. The committee discussed various measures to ensure grid stability, including synchronizing the commissioning of transmission lines with renewable projects and optimizing transmission investments by encouraging bulk consumers near renewable energy complexes.
