Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Reaches Key Milestone with Completion of Mountain Tunnel Breakthrough
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has reached a significant milestone with its third mountain tunnel breakthrough in Maharashtra, achieved within just five months. This development, announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlights the rapid progress of India’s first high-speed rail corridor. The breakthrough occurred in Dahanu taluka of Palghar district, further advancing the ambitious 508-kilometer rail line that promises to revolutionize travel between two of India’s major cities.
Progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor
The construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor is gaining momentum nearly nine years after its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in September 2017. The project has seen significant advancements, including the construction of viaducts, the initiation of undersea tunnel work near Mumbai, and the development of stations along the route. The first indigenously developed high-speed trainset is expected to be operational by 2027, marking a new era in Indian rail travel.
Recently, the project celebrated the successful launch of a viaduct over the Kalupur flyover in Ahmedabad. This viaduct runs parallel to the existing railway line and was completed using the Span-by-Span (SBS) method. The bridge features a 45-meter span and a total weight of 1,200 metric tonnes. The Kalupur flyover is a crucial transportation link in Ahmedabad, connecting several key areas and serving thousands of commuters daily.
Infrastructure Developments and Challenges
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor will traverse 31 crossings in Ahmedabad district, including eight Indian Railways crossings, a road flyover, and several canal crossings. Notably, work on 23 of these crossings has already been completed, showcasing the project’s commitment to timely execution. The corridor is designed to accommodate trains traveling at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour, significantly reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Currently, regular trains take approximately seven hours to cover this route, while the Vande Bharat Express takes around five-and-a-half hours. In contrast, the fastest service on the new corridor is projected to complete the journey in just over two hours, making it a game-changer for business and leisure travelers alike.
International Collaboration and Economic Impact
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is being developed with substantial technical and financial support from Japan, utilizing the Shinkansen system. The Japanese government is funding approximately 81 percent of the project through a soft loan with a remarkably low interest rate of 0.1 percent, repayable over 50 years. This collaboration not only enhances infrastructure but also aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, promoting technology transfer and local manufacturing.
The route has been strategically chosen due to its status as one of India’s busiest business travel corridors. Mumbai, as the financial capital, and Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara as major industrial hubs, create a high demand for efficient transportation. Passenger demand projections and economic feasibility studies have played a crucial role in the project’s planning, ensuring it meets the needs of a growing urban population.
