India and Vietnam Strengthen Strategic Relations with Ambitious $25 Billion Trade Goal by 2030
India and Vietnam have taken significant steps to strengthen their bilateral relationship, aiming to establish an “Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” This ambitious initiative was announced following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese President To Lam. The two leaders emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation in trade, defense, and technology, setting a target of $25 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. This move reflects a shared commitment to enhancing strategic and economic ties between the two rapidly growing nations in Asia.
Strengthening Economic Ties
During their meeting, Modi and To Lam outlined a roadmap for enhancing economic collaboration. The two countries have set a new bilateral trade target of $25 billion by 2030, signaling their intent to increase engagement. This ambitious goal aims to capitalize on the strengths of both nations, which are among the fastest-growing economies in Asia. The leaders also discussed expanding investment flows in key sectors such as high-technology manufacturing, renewable energy, logistics, electric vehicles, and digital services.
Additionally, the two nations made progress in market access for agricultural goods. They welcomed the approval for the export of Indian grapes and Vietnamese durians, while also committing to expedite access for other products, including pomegranates and pomelos. This focus on agricultural trade is expected to enhance food security and economic stability in both countries.
Defense and Strategic Cooperation
The discussions also highlighted the importance of defense and strategic cooperation between India and Vietnam. Both nations agreed to enhance defense procurement and industrial collaboration, reflecting their growing alignment in the Indo-Pacific region. Maritime cooperation emerged as a critical area of focus, with both countries recognizing the need for security and domain awareness in the region.
Vietnam expressed its appreciation for India’s offer to host a liaison officer at the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region in Gurugram. This collaboration is expected to bolster maritime security and enhance information sharing between the two nations.
Digital Economy and Emerging Technologies
In addition to trade and defense, India and Vietnam are set to strengthen their cooperation in the digital economy. The leaders discussed enabling micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to integrate into global value chains through e-commerce platforms. This initiative aims to enhance the competitiveness of businesses in both countries and promote economic growth.
The partnership will also expand into emerging technologies, covering areas such as digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, 6G, space, and critical minerals. A series of agreements, including one between the Reserve Bank of India and the State Bank of Vietnam, aim to foster financial innovation and facilitate cross-border digital payments through QR-based systems.
Development Partnership and Cultural Linkages
India’s development partnership in Vietnam was also a focal point of the discussions. The two countries highlighted the implementation of 66 quick impact projects across various provinces, which have been well-received for their grassroots impact. These projects aim to improve living standards and foster sustainable development in Vietnam.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of enhancing cultural linkages between the two nations. By prioritizing cultural exchanges, both countries aim to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen people-to-people connections. This holistic approach to bilateral relations underscores the commitment of both India and Vietnam to work together for a prosperous future.
