Centre Guarantees Steady LPG Supply, Introduces Alternative Fuels to Meet Demand
The Indian government has reassured citizens about the stability of fuel supplies amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized that essential fuel supply chains remain intact and operational. The government has urged the public to refrain from panic buying and to rely on official communications for accurate information regarding fuel availability.
Government Measures to Ensure Fuel Supply
In light of the disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict, the Indian government has implemented several measures to maintain an uninterrupted fuel supply across the country. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that the supply chains for essential fuels, including Domestic LPG, Domestic PNG, and CNG for transportation, are functioning at full capacity. The ministry reassured the public that there have been no reports of dry-outs at LPG distributorships, indicating that household supply remains a top priority. To manage demand effectively, the government has extended LPG booking intervals and promoted the use of alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal.
Response to Rising Crude Prices
The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has led to a significant increase in global crude prices, prompting the Indian government to take fiscal measures to protect consumers. In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on citizens, the government has reduced excise duties on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre. Additionally, export levies on diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) have been adjusted, with the levy on diesel decreasing from ₹55.50 to ₹23 per litre and on ATF from ₹42 to ₹33 per litre. These steps aim to stabilize fuel prices and ensure that consumers are not adversely affected by the rising costs of crude oil.
Focus on Cleaner Energy Initiatives
The Indian government is also making strides towards cleaner energy solutions. Since March 2026, approximately 5.96 lakh PNG connections have been established, bringing the total to 8.64 lakh connections. Furthermore, around 6.66 lakh customers have registered for new connections, reflecting the government’s commitment to promoting cleaner energy sources. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to transition towards more sustainable energy practices while ensuring that the energy needs of the population are met.
Maritime Operations and Safety of Seafarers
In a related update, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has reported that maritime operations remain stable despite the geopolitical tensions in the region. All Indian seafarers in the affected areas are reported to be safe, with no incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels occurring in the past 24 hours. The ministry has successfully facilitated the safe repatriation of over 2,922 Indian seafarers, ensuring their well-being during this challenging time. The government continues to monitor the situation closely and has reassured the public that adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are available at petrol pumps nationwide.
