External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the ongoing geopolitical challenges facing India during his speech at the 15th Annual Convocation Ceremony of IIM Raipur. He emphasized that India has navigated through the turbulent waters of the Middle East conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war with resilience. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of adapting to a rapidly changing global order, urging countries to focus on strategies such as hedging, de-risking, and diversifying their approaches to international relations.

He noted that the country has emerged resilient despite facing multiple global shocks. “No one can dispute that the multiple global shocks that have recently tested our resilience, and that India has come through that solidly,” he stated. He pointed out that India is now among the top five economies in the world and possesses a sense of optimism that is often absent in other regions. This optimism, he believes, is crucial for India’s future growth and stability.
The minister also remarked on the structural shifts occurring in the global order, indicating that the relative power and influence of nations are changing rapidly. He acknowledged that some societies struggle to adapt to these transformations, which can lead to instability. Jaishankar’s comments reflect a broader understanding of the geopolitical landscape and the necessity for nations to reassess their strategies in light of these changes.
Strategic Focus on National Capabilities
In his address, Jaishankar underscored the importance of building national capabilities as India aims for its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He emphasized that enhancing these capabilities is essential in the context of global trends that demand greater resilience and adaptability. “Building national capabilities has become more critical in the light of the global trends that I have mentioned,” he said. This focus on self-reliance and capacity building is seen as vital for India’s long-term growth and stability.
The minister also praised the principles of inclusive growth, representative politics, and decisive leadership as foundational elements for achieving this vision. He stressed that India must strive to secure as many resources and capabilities as possible within its control, which will be crucial for navigating future challenges.
Foreign Policy and Global Engagement
Jaishankar outlined India’s current foreign policy objectives, which include expanding market access for Indian producers, securing essential resources and technologies, and supporting Indian citizens abroad. He emphasized the importance of promoting “Brand India” on the global stage. “Our foreign policy is today focused on expanding market access for Indian producers. It is also focused on helping to secure resources, technologies, and essential goods,” he explained.
