US Wholesale Inflation Rises to 3.4% in February, Driven by Food Cost Increases

US wholesale prices surged unexpectedly in February, indicating rising inflationary pressures even before the recent spike in global energy prices due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. According to data from the Labor Department, the producer price index (PPI) increased by 0.7% from January and 3.4% from February 2025, marking the highest year-on-year rise since that time. This increase surpassed economists’ predictions and raised concerns about further inflation risks as oil prices continue to climb sharply.

Inflationary Trends and Economic Impact

The latest figures from the Labor Department reveal significant inflationary trends at the wholesale level. The PPI’s 0.7% rise from January and 3.4% increase from February 2025 suggest that inflation is becoming a pressing issue. Economists had anticipated a more modest increase, but the data indicates that inflationary pressures are mounting. Carl B. Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics, noted that these substantial increases are likely to fuel discussions about affordability in the political arena. He also warned that energy prices would likely spike further in the March report due to the ongoing conflict in Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The conflict has already led to a nearly 50% increase in oil prices since the war began, with gasoline prices rising sharply. The average cost of a gallon of gasoline in the US has surged to $3.84, a significant jump from below $3 just a month ago. Diesel prices, which are crucial for transportation, are also experiencing rapid increases. These rising energy costs are expected to contribute to ongoing inflationary pressures in the economy.

Core Prices and Food Costs

Excluding the volatile food and energy sectors, core wholesale prices rose by 0.5% from January, a decrease from the previous month’s 0.8% rise but still exceeding economists’ expectations. On an annual basis, core prices increased by 3.9%, the highest rate since January 2025. This persistent rise in core prices indicates that inflation is not merely a temporary phenomenon but may be indicative of deeper economic issues.

Food prices also saw a notable increase, rising by 2.4% in February. This surge was driven by a staggering 49% jump in vegetable prices and a 10% rise in fruit prices. While food costs remain lower than they were a year ago, some economists caution that these emerging cost pressures could exacerbate inflation trends in the coming months. The unexpected rise in wholesale inflation in January, initially viewed as a temporary spike, now appears to signal more persistent inflationary challenges.

Market Reactions and Federal Reserve Considerations

The inflation data coincided with a Federal Reserve meeting in Washington, where policymakers were deliberating on the benchmark interest rate. The central bank had previously cut rates three times last year as inflation seemed to be moderating. However, the current economic landscape, complicated by rising energy prices due to the Iran conflict, has led to expectations that borrowing costs will remain unchanged.

Investors reacted cautiously to the inflation figures, as evidenced by the performance of US equity markets. Major indices, including the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq Composite, reversed early gains and fell into negative territory following the release of the producer price data. Recent government reports indicate that consumer inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, with consumer prices rising 2.4% compared to February 2025. The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, also showed a 2.8% increase in January from the previous year, with core PCE inflation rising by 3.1%, marking the largest increase in nearly two years.
