TSA Confirms PreCheck Remains Operational Amid Funding Dispute

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced on Sunday that its PreCheck program will continue to operate despite a partial government shutdown that raised concerns about airport security services. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security had previously indicated that TSA services might be suspended due to staffing shortages. However, as of midday Sunday, security wait times at major airports remained manageable, with many travelers reporting no disruptions in their travel plans.

Operational Status of TSA PreCheck

The TSA confirmed that it would assess staffing constraints on a case-by-case basis while keeping the PreCheck program functional. This decision comes in light of a partial government shutdown that began on February 14, stemming from a failure to reach an agreement on funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Travelers using TSA PreCheck reported smooth experiences at various airports, with wait times generally under 15 minutes. For instance, Amy Wainscott, who traveled from Destin-Fort Walton Beach to Dallas Love Field, noted that everything seemed normal at the airport, and she was unaware of the shutdown until after her screening. Similarly, Jean Fay, flying from Baltimore to Texas, experienced no issues during her PreCheck process and only learned about the shutdown while changing planes in Austin.

Impact on Global Entry and Other Services

While TSA PreCheck remains operational, it is unclear how the shutdown will affect Global Entry, another expedited service for travelers returning to the U.S. Global Entry allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to use expedited kiosks at customs. The potential suspension of these services could lead to longer wait times and increased frustration for travelers. Since its inception in 2013, TSA PreCheck has enrolled over 20 million Americans, many of whom also hold Global Entry memberships. The TSA has indicated that it will prioritize the majority of travelers, which raises concerns about the impact on those using expedited services.

Political Context and Reactions

The ongoing partial government shutdown is tied to political disagreements over immigration policy and funding. The Department of Homeland Security has stated that it is implementing emergency measures to conserve limited resources, which initially included the suspension of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry services. Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, expressed relief that the TSA decided to keep PreCheck operational, avoiding further complications for travelers. However, the announcement of potential service suspensions drew criticism from various stakeholders, including Airlines for America, which called for Congress to reach a resolution. The group emphasized that the short notice given to travelers was inadequate for planning.

Concerns for Travelers and Future Implications

The TSA has indicated that certain services, such as courtesy escorts for Members of Congress, will be suspended to allow officers to focus on security operations. This decision highlights the broader implications of the government shutdown on airport security and traveler experience. Democrats on the House Committee on Homeland Security have criticized the handling of airport security, suggesting that the administration’s actions are politically motivated and detrimental to the traveling public. Senator Andy Kim of New Jersey accused the administration of using the shutdown as a tactic to distract from other issues, asserting that the American people are aware of these maneuvers. As the situation evolves, travelers remain concerned about the potential for increased delays and disruptions in the coming days.
