Siddhesh Lad’s Inspiring Journey: Battling Retirement Doubts to Set New Ranji Trophy Records

Siddhesh Lad showcased his exceptional form on Day Two of the Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Delhi at the MCA ground in Bandra-Kurla Complex. The Mumbai captain scored an impressive unbeaten 102 runs off 170 balls, marking his fifth century of the season. This achievement places him alongside cricket legends Rusi Modi and Sachin Tendulkar as only the third Mumbai player to score five centuries in a single Ranji Trophy season. With a total of 736 runs at an average of 105.14, Lad is currently the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament and has now hit four consecutive centuries.
A Remarkable Comeback
Lad’s resurgence in form is particularly noteworthy given his earlier struggles with motivation, which led him to contemplate retirement. After a season with Goa, he returned to Mumbai and finished as the team’s top run-scorer in the previous season, amassing 602 runs at an average of 60.20. His father and coach, Dinesh Lad, revealed that Siddhesh faced a similar crisis before the current season but was encouraged by family and friends to continue playing. Dinesh emphasized the importance of support from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and its president, Ajinkya Naik, who believed in Siddhesh’s potential and urged him to aim for six centuries this season.
The Path to Maturity
Siddhesh Lad attributes his current success to the experience he has gained over the years. He expressed that he now understands his game better, knowing when and how to score runs effectively. This maturity has transformed him from a player who often fell short of converting half-centuries into hundreds to one who is consistently finding the boundary. He acknowledged that he used to struggle with his conversion rate, having recorded around 30 half-centuries in first-class cricket. However, since returning to Mumbai, he has developed a hunger for runs that has significantly improved his performance.
Looking Ahead
While Lad is focused on his immediate goal of winning the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, he also harbors aspirations of representing India. He stated that playing for the national team has always been his ultimate dream, but he is currently concentrating on his contributions to the team. Lad expressed gratitude towards the MCA for their faith in him, especially after his return at the age of 32. He emphasized the importance of this support in motivating him to perform at his best.
Concerns Over Playing Conditions
In addition to his on-field achievements, Lad raised concerns about the dust and pollution at the MCA ground, which could impact the players’ health during upcoming knockout matches. He noted that several players had been wearing masks while fielding due to the poor air quality caused by nearby construction. Lad stressed the need for the team management to address these issues promptly, as they could affect the players’ performance in crucial matches ahead.
