Karnataka Fishing Harbour Project Receives Major Funding Boost
The Department of Fisheries, Government of India, is making strides to enhance the fisheries sector in Karnataka through significant financial support and modernization initiatives. Recently, the government approved the modernization and upgradation of Mangalore Fishing Harbour, allocating a budget of Rs 37.47 crore, with Rs 22.48 crore coming from central funds under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
To bolster the state’s fisheries development from 2023-24 to 2026-27, the Department has released an impressive Rs 126.01 crore. This funding aims not only to upgrade Mangalore Fishing Harbour but also supports a variety of projects enhancing the overall fishing infrastructure in Karnataka.
As part of the harbor modernization effort, the Karnataka government has reported that 25% of the project is already completed, with an expenditure of Rs 6.31 crore thus far. The upgraded facilities are expected to accommodate up to 1,600 fishing vessels, benefiting around 18,000 fishers and associated stakeholders.
Long-Term Goals and Milestones
The Karnataka government plans to complete the remaining components of the Mangalore Fishing Harbour project by May 21, 2027. The initiative is part of a broader strategy under PMMSY, which allocated a total budget of Rs 1,053.60 crore for various fisheries development projects in Karnataka between 2020-21 and 2026-2027.
As part of this extensive program, the selection of beneficiaries for various initiatives, which include deep-sea fishing vessels, ice plants, and cold storage facilities, is handled by the state government. Currently, 212 beneficiaries across three coastal districts in Karnataka have engaged in these support programs.
Comprehensive Support for Fishers
To further support the fisheries sector, the Department of Fisheries has implemented multiple measures under PMMSY. These include developing fishing harbors, enhancing cold chain infrastructure, and ensuring hygienic fish handling facilities. The government has also focused on improving fish transport and marketing strategies while ensuring quality fish seed production.
Furthermore, financing options through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) and Kisan Credit Card (KCC) have been made available. The initiatives aim to strengthen aquatic animal health, promote biosecurity measures, provide insurance coverage for fishers, and facilitate capacity-building efforts.
This valuable information regarding the fisheries development projects was presented in a Lok Sabha session by Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, responding affirmatively to inquiries about the federal and state collaboration in improving fisheries infrastructure in India.
