As the global race for artificial intelligence (AI) intensifies, Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys and EkStep, has urged India to seize the opportunity to leverage AI for enhancing livelihoods and generating economic value. Speaking at an event organized by the EkStep Foundation in Bengaluru, Nilekani highlighted the dual nature of the AI race, emphasizing the importance of focusing on responsible AI that benefits society. The event showcased various applications of voice AI across multiple sectors, underscoring India’s potential to lead in this transformative technology.
The Dual Race in AI Development
Nandan Nilekani articulated a critical perspective on the current landscape of AI, describing it as a “race to the bottom” and a “race to the top.” He pointed out that much of the existing AI discourse revolves around negative aspects, such as exploitation of vulnerabilities like loneliness and mental health issues. In contrast, he advocates for a focus on how AI can be harnessed to uplift livelihoods and create tangible economic benefits. Nilekani’s remarks come at a time when the potential of AI is being explored across various sectors, including government services, agriculture, and logistics. He stressed the need for India to prioritize the “race to the top,” which emphasizes responsible AI development that serves the greater good.
Guardrails for Responsible AI
During his address, Nilekani underscored the necessity of implementing guardrails to ensure that AI technologies function as intended. He expressed concerns about the exaggerated fears surrounding superintelligence and job displacement, suggesting that the conversation should shift towards creating AI systems that are reliable and beneficial. He noted that while the AI community often discusses grand visions of productivity and leisure, the focus should remain on practical applications that enhance everyday life. By establishing clear boundaries and responsible practices, India can lead the way in developing AI that positively impacts society.
India’s Digital Infrastructure Success
Referencing the success of Aadhaar, Nilekani highlighted India’s capability to build large-scale digital infrastructure efficiently. He pointed out that initiatives like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have revolutionized transactions, allowing vendors to conduct business without incurring fees. This model of frugal innovation, he argued, should be replicated in the AI sector. By refining existing technologies and designing tailored solutions, India can create an environment where AI benefits a broad spectrum of the population. Nilekani is optimistic that significant advancements will occur in the next two years, driven by collaboration within the tech community.
The Future of Voice-Based AI
Nilekani also emphasized the importance of voice-based AI as a practical interface for the Indian populace. He believes that just as UPI simplified digital payments, voice-driven technologies can eliminate barriers in various sectors, including agriculture and education. This approach could democratize access to opportunities, making literacy less of a barrier for many citizens. His vision aligns with the broader goal of achieving digital equity, ensuring that all individuals can benefit from technological advancements. Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director for South Asia at Nvidia, echoed this sentiment, stating that India is on the verge of becoming a global hub for intelligence, with Bengaluru poised to lead the charge.
