Calls for Pakistan to Withdraw from T20 World Cup in Solidarity with Bangladesh

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to take a firm stance by boycotting the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup. His call comes amid a scheduling and security dispute involving the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which faces exclusion from the tournament if it does not travel to India due to safety concerns. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the original schedule will remain unchanged, denying Bangladesh’s request to relocate its matches to Sri Lanka. The BCB has a 24-hour window to consult with its government regarding participation.

PCB’s Solidarity with Bangladesh

Reports from Pakistani media indicate that the PCB has shown solidarity with Bangladesh, pausing its national team’s World Cup preparations while awaiting clarity on the situation. Latif emphasized that this is a pivotal moment for Pakistan to challenge the existing cricketing power dynamics. He stated that if Pakistan and India do not compete, it would significantly diminish the tournament’s appeal. Latif believes that Pakistan should publicly support Bangladesh by refusing to participate in the T20 World Cup, asserting that this is an opportunity to take a strong stand.

ICC’s Stance on Security Concerns

Latif criticized the ICC for its handling of the security concerns raised by the BCB. He pointed out that the ICC’s refusal to consider relocating matches to Sri Lanka is inconsistent, especially given that similar adjustments have been made in the past when India and Pakistan faced similar issues. Latif questioned the ICC’s assurance that there is no danger to Bangladeshi players in India, arguing that no organization can guarantee complete safety. He expressed hope that all teams remain safe during the tournament.

The Importance of Pakistan’s Decision

Latif stressed that Pakistan holds significant leverage in this situation and should use it wisely. He referred to the current scenario as a “trump card” for Pakistan, asserting that the country has a unique opportunity to influence the tournament’s outcome. He warned that while Pakistan could face future sanctions for refusing to participate in ICC events, the time has come to demonstrate true support for Bangladesh. Latif concluded by stating that Pakistan’s absence from the World Cup would be a substantial blow to the event itself.

Upcoming T20 World Cup Details

The Men’s T20 World Cup is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, featuring matches across eight venues. Bangladesh is placed in Group C alongside England, Nepal, Italy, and the West Indies, while Pakistan is drawn in Group A with India, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA. As the situation unfolds, the PCB’s decision will be closely watched by cricket fans and stakeholders alike.
