Google and OpenAI Restrict Free Access: New Limits for Gemini 3 Pro and Sora 2

It’s a challenging time for users who depend on free AI tools, as Google and OpenAI have recently tightened access to their latest models, Gemini 3 Pro and Sora 2. These adjustments come in response to increasing demand and rising operational costs, indicating a significant shift in how these major AI platforms manage user access. As both companies refine their offerings, the implications for free users are becoming increasingly clear.

Google Adjusts Access to Gemini 3 Pro

Google was the first to implement changes, modifying the access limits for its Gemini 3 Pro model shortly after its launch. Initially, the platform allowed free users to submit up to five prompts daily and generate three images using the Nano Banana Pro feature. However, the support page has since removed these specific figures, now stating that free access comes with “daily limits [that] may change frequently.” This vague language suggests that users may face fluctuating access based on demand and system capacity.

In a recent update, the image generation limit was briefly reduced to two images per day before reverting to three. Google has indicated that these numbers are subject to change, emphasizing that the availability of free resources will depend on overall demand. This move reflects a broader trend among AI companies to manage resources more effectively while still providing some level of free access.

OpenAI’s New Limits on Sora 2

OpenAI has followed suit with its Sora 2 model, significantly reducing the daily video generation limit for free users from 30 to just six. Bill Peebles, the head of Sora at OpenAI, addressed the change on social media platform X, citing that the platform’s “GPUs are melting” due to overwhelming usage. This statement highlights the substantial computational power required for video generation, which has led to the need for stricter limits.

The adjustments made by OpenAI and Google signal a strategic shift in their approach to free access. While both companies continue to offer free services, they are increasingly prioritizing paid users, particularly during peak demand periods. Google has explicitly stated that if system capacity declines, free accounts will face the first round of restrictions to ensure service quality for paying customers.

Benefits of Paid Plans

For users willing to invest in paid plans, the benefits are substantial. Subscribers enjoy significantly higher limits on prompts, image creation, and context size, with the context window expanding from 32,000 tokens for free users to an impressive 1 million for Pro and Ultra subscribers. This enhancement allows for the handling of larger files and more complex analyses.

Moreover, features such as video generation, in-depth research capabilities, and increased image generation limits are exclusively available to paying users. This trend indicates that as generative AI technology continues to advance, companies are increasingly steering users toward subscription models to support the resource-intensive nature of these services. While free access remains an option, the full range of capabilities is now clearly positioned behind a paywall, reflecting the evolving landscape of AI tools.
