Smriti Mandhana Reflects on 45 Sleepless Nights Following India’s World Cup Triumph

India celebrated a historic achievement by clinching their first ICC Women’s World Cup title on November 3 in Navi Mumbai. The victory was marked by standout performances from Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma. Mandhana, who scored 434 runs throughout the tournament, became the second-highest run-scorer, while Sharma’s impressive bowling figures of 5/39 played a crucial role in dismissing South Africa for 246 runs. Mandhana’s exceptional World Cup journey included breaking Mithali Raj’s record for the best performance by an Indian batter in a World Cup, averaging 54.25 with a century and two fifties.

India’s Strong Batting Performance

After winning the toss, South Africa opted to bowl first, allowing India to set a challenging target of 298 runs. The innings began with a solid partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who contributed 45 and 87 runs, respectively. Their collaboration laid a strong foundation for the innings. Following their partnership, Jemimah Rodrigues added 24 runs, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur contributed 20 runs alongside Deepti Sharma. The latter played a pivotal role in the middle order, scoring 58 runs, while Richa Ghosh supported with 34 runs. Ayabonga Khaka was the standout bowler for South Africa, taking 3 wickets for 58 runs.

South Africa’s Chase and India’s Bowling Prowess

South Africa began their chase with a promising opening stand of 50 runs. However, the Indian bowlers quickly turned the tide, with Shafali Verma taking 2 wickets for 36 runs. Despite a valiant effort from captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 101 runs, South Africa struggled to maintain momentum. The turning point came when Deepti Sharma dismissed both Wolvaardt and Annerie Dercksen, leaving South Africa reeling at 221 for 8. Deepti’s remarkable performance made her the first Indian woman to achieve a four-wicket haul in a World Cup final, ultimately securing her five-wicket haul and sealing India’s victory.

Mandhana’s Emotional Reflection on the Win

In the post-match interview, Smriti Mandhana expressed her joy and relief at finally lifting the World Cup trophy. She reflected on the team’s journey, highlighting the heartbreaks they faced in previous tournaments. Mandhana emphasized the importance of growth in women’s cricket and the team’s commitment to supporting one another. She noted the positive environment within the team, which played a significant role in their success. Mandhana’s emotional speech resonated with fans, showcasing the dedication and resilience of the Indian women’s cricket team throughout the tournament.
