Garmin Unveils Google Maps Integration with Turn-by-Turn Navigation

Google has introduced a new era of navigation for smartwatch users with the launch of a standalone Google Maps app for Garmin devices. Released on July 8, 2023, this app offers turn-by-turn navigation capabilities, enhancing the functionality of Garmin smartwatches. Users can now receive navigation notifications directly on their devices after entering their destination via the Google Maps app on their Android smartphones. This development marks a significant step forward in wearable technology, providing users with a more seamless navigation experience.

Garmin’s Google Maps App

Garmin has made its new Google Maps app available for free on the Connect IQ Store, allowing smartwatch users to benefit from turn-by-turn navigation. The app, which was launched on July 8, currently holds an average rating of 2.8 stars based on feedback from 294 users. To utilize the app effectively, users must input their destination through the Google Maps app on their Android smartphones. Once the destination is set, the smartwatch will provide notifications for each turn during navigation.

The app is compatible with several Garmin smartwatch series, including the Venu, Forerunner, Vรญvoactive, and Fenix series. Additionally, the app’s landing page indicates future compatibility with the Garmin epix, Enduro, Approach, D2, and MARQ series. One of the app’s notable features is its ability to gently vibrate the smartwatch when users are walking, providing discreet navigation prompts. Users can also tap the app logo to view the next three turns, ensuring they stay on track. Furthermore, Garmin smartwatch owners can record their walks, runs, and bike rides while using the app, syncing their activity data with Garmin Connect after reaching their destination.

Two Years After Wear OS Got Standalone Google Maps Support

In January 2023, Google rolled out standalone turn-by-turn navigation support for Wear OS smartwatches equipped with LTE. Prior to this update, Wear OS devices required a connected smartphone to access navigation features. The 2023 enhancement allowed users to navigate without needing to carry their smartphones, significantly improving the convenience of using smartwatches for outdoor activities.

However, Garmin’s new Google Maps app does not offer standalone support. Users of Garmin smartwatches must still rely on their connected Android smartphones to access turn-by-turn navigation. This limitation means that while Garmin has made strides in enhancing its smartwatch capabilities, it has not yet reached the level of independence that Wear OS devices now enjoy. As Garmin continues to innovate, users will be eager to see how the company addresses this gap in functionality in future updates.
