India and New Zealand Elevate Defence Ties in Strategic Dialogue
The second edition of the Defence Strategic Dialogue between India and New Zealand took place in Wellington on August 24, 2026. Co-chaired by Joint Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Defence, Shri Amitabh Prasad, and Deputy Secretary of the New Zealand Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Schmidt, the discussions aimed to enhance maritime security, joint military training, and overall defence collaboration between the two nations.
Strengthening Strategic Partnerships
Building on the framework established during a summit-level meeting held last month, the delegations from both countries engaged in thorough discussions aimed at advancing their recently upgraded Strategic Partnership. A key focus was the implementation of strategic goals set out in the India-New Zealand Strategic Partnership Roadmap for 2030.
Commitment to a Free Indo-Pacific
Both nations reiterated their commitment to maintaining a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Extensive deliberations were held on various ways to enhance military-to-military engagement. Suggestions included conducting joint training exercises, establishing cross-service personnel exchanges, and fostering partnerships through defence staff colleges across maritime, air, and land sectors.
High-Level Meetings Foster Actionable Strategies
During the visit, the Indian delegation held high-level meetings with prominent figures from the New Zealand Defence Force and Ministry of Defence. Key discussions took place with the Vice Chief of Defence Force, the Commander of Joint Forces New Zealand, and the Deputy Secretary for Capability Delivery. The talks were concentrated on fostering insights into joint capital procurement efforts, aligning operational frameworks, and ensuring effective coordination for future engagements.
Future Cooperation and Engagements
The dialogue concluded with both sides agreeing to increase the pace of high-level and ministerial exchanges. There is a shared optimism that the initiatives discussed during this meeting will significantly strengthen defence and security cooperation, forming a vital component of their bilateral relations.
