India Unveils Indigenous Micro and Small Gas Turbine Engines

In a major advancement toward self-reliance in aerospace technology, CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) unveiled three indigenous Micro and Small Gas Turbine Engines in New Delhi. These engines, named NJ-05, NJ-50, and NJ-100, are designed to deliver thrusts of 5 kg, 50 kg, and 100 kg, respectively. They are crucial for enhancing India’s defense capabilities, particularly in tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drone interceptors, and compact missile systems.

The launch event took place at the SSB Auditorium within the CSIR Headquarters and was attended by top officials from India’s defense and scientific sectors. Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Dr. Abhay A. Pashilkar, Director of CSIR-NAL, welcomed the attendees, emphasizing the laboratory’s transformative role in integrating components for the country’s evolving drone ecosystem. He noted the potential of Indian industry and the burgeoning aerospace start-up landscape to manufacture these advanced engines at scale, thereby meeting the demands of the Indian defense sector.

During the event, the CSIR-NAL scientific team, led by Shri R. Prathapanayaka, delivered a detailed technical presentation. They highlighted the significant advancements in high-RPM turbomachinery and high-temperature combustion technologies that enabled the creation of these advanced indigenous propulsion systems.

Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), praised the collaborative efforts behind the engine development. She remarked that the indigenous creation of such specialized subsystems marks a pivotal achievement in promoting the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative within aerospace engineering.

Air Marshal Tejinder Singh addressed the gathering following the engine unveiling. He emphasized the strategic necessity of developing advanced gas turbine technologies domestically. He noted that strengthening indigenous capabilities in this critical arena would bolster national security and enhance the technological self-sufficiency of Indian Armed Forces.

The successful introduction of the NJ-05, NJ-50, and NJ-100 engines is a vital stride towards establishing a domestic ecosystem for designing, developing, and manufacturing miniaturized gas turbine propulsion systems. As domestic manufacturing capabilities grow, these innovations are set to play a significant role in the expanding UAV, drone, and defense aerospace sectors in India.
