Foxconn, Apple’s Leading Contract Manufacturer, Prepares for Upcoming Developments

As Apple continues its efforts to diversify its supply chain beyond China, Foxconn is making significant strides in India. The Taiwanese manufacturer is investing $2.56 billion in a sprawling 300-acre campus in Devanahalli, Karnataka, which will house dormitories for its workforce of 30,000. Despite recent comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump urging Apple to keep production in the U.S., Apple CEO Tim Cook remains committed to manufacturing a majority of iPhones for the U.S. market in India.

Foxconn’s Expansive Investment in Devanahalli

Foxconn’s ambitious project in Devanahalli is set to transform the region into a major hub for Apple product assembly. The company is currently constructing dormitories to accommodate its workforce, which is expected to reach 30,000 employees. This residential complex will be one of the largest of its kind in India, designed specifically for factory workers. The construction is progressing rapidly, with completion anticipated by December 2023. The facility is strategically located just 34 kilometers from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, enhancing its logistical advantages.

The investment plan includes an allocation of Rs 3,000 crore for the first phase, covering the period from 2023 to 2024, with a similar amount earmarked for the second phase, set for 2026 to 2027. Foxconn aims to manufacture approximately 100,000 iPhones by December 2023, demonstrating its commitment to meeting production targets and fulfilling Apple’s growing demand.

Workforce and Accommodation Plans

Foxconn’s Devanahalli facility will prioritize the accommodation of female employees, who make up a significant portion of the workforce, estimated to be between 50% and 80%. The company has a history of establishing residential quarters for its workers, similar to its operations in Tamil Nadu, where it accommodates 18,000 workers at its Sriperumbudur facility. The dormitories at Devanahalli are designed exclusively for factory staff, ensuring that essential personnel have a comfortable living environment close to their workplace.
