Life and Career

He was born on 18 March 1966 in the Sierra Madre mountain range in the state of Chihuahua. Baldenegro López’s activism began in the 1980s, when he became involved in efforts to protect the forests of the Sierra Madre from logging and mining. He was a prominent leader of the local movement against illegal logging and deforestation, and his work earned him recognition as an environmental defender by the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2005.

In addition to his environmental work, Baldenegro López was also an advocate for indigenous rights and social justice. He spoke out against the discrimination and marginalization faced by the Tarahumara people, and worked to promote their culture and way of life.
