Richard R. Ernst was born on 14 August 1933, in Winterthur, Switzerland.

He showed an early aptitude for science and pursued his education with great enthusiasm. He attended the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich, where he studied chemistry and completed his doctoral degree in 1962.

Ernst’s career is highlighted by his groundbreaking work in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. He made significant contributions to the development of Fourier transform NMR, a technique that revolutionized the field by drastically improving the speed and precision of NMR measurements. This innovation laid the foundation for various applications in chemistry, physics, and medicine.

His work culminated in the publication of a seminal paper in 1971, where he outlined the principles of two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy.
