India Launches Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar 2026 Campaign
In a significant move towards ocean conservation, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Earth Sciences, has inaugurated the fifth edition of the “Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar 2026: SSSS v.5.0” initiative. This campaign, which builds on the achievements of the previous four years, aims to unite various community stakeholders—citizens, students, youth, coastal communities, and NGOs—to protect India’s extensive coastlines. The initiative is inspired by the Swachh Bharat vision articulated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
“Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar 5.0” is set to take place from September 12 to 19, 2026. The Minister encouraged widespread participation in activities such as beach clean-up drives, upcoming rallies, and youth-oriented events to help safeguard India’s valuable coastal resources. In a message shared on social media, he called upon citizens to take an ocean pledge and be active participants in this nationwide movement.
During the launch, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of this campaign, stating that it has evolved into a people’s movement. He highlighted India’s impressive coastlines, stretching over 11,000 kilometers, and the need for collective efforts to preserve them. “This year, we aim to elevate the movement to even greater heights,” he declared. The campaign will feature a variety of activities designed to foster environmental awareness and community engagement.
Engagement Activities Planned
The week-long celebration will include major beach clean-up efforts across more than 100 locations, cycling rallies, marathons, and unique events like the inaugural Ocean Olympiad aimed at youth. Other events, such as ozone awareness activities, are also scheduled throughout the week to enhance public understanding of oceanic issues.

The event’s digital aspect will showcase a dedicated website for the SSSS v.5.0 campaign, along with an informative introductory video. Dr. Singh has invited everyone to participate in the Ocean Conservation Pledges through the campaign’s official website, reinforcing the importance of collective action in making India’s shores cleaner and healthier for future generations.

The Ministry encourages all citizens to take part in the upcoming coastal cleanup event.
