Francisco González Bocanegra (8 January 1824 – 11 April 1861) was a Mexican poet who wrote the lyrics of Himno Nacional Mexicano, the Mexican National Anthem in 1853.
Life and Career
Francisco González Bocanegra was born on 8 January 1824 in Mexico City. He studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He later pursued a career in diplomacy and held various positions in the Mexican government, including as ambassador to the United States and to Spain. Bocanegra is remembered for his contributions to Mexican literature and national identity. In addition to writing the national anthem, he also wrote several poems and plays that were popular in Mexico during the 19th century. Bocanegra passed away on 11 April 1861 at the age of 37.
