Vidya Balan Set to Headline Indian Film Festival of Perth as Chief Guest in January 2027

The inaugural Indian Film Festival of Perth (IFFP) is set to take place from January 22 to 24, 2027, with acclaimed actress Vidya Balan as the Chief Guest. This festival aims to introduce Western Australian audiences to the rich diversity of Indian cinema. The event marks a significant addition to the celebration of Indian films in Australia, promising to connect filmmakers and audiences while strengthening cultural ties.

A New Chapter for Indian Cinema in Australia

The IFFP is organized by the same team behind the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) and the Indian Film Festival of Sydney (IFFS). With established platforms already in Melbourne and Sydney, the Perth edition seeks to broaden the reach of Indian cinema. The festival will provide opportunities for filmmakers and audiences to engage with one another, fostering a deeper understanding of Indian culture through film.

The announcement of the festival coincided with a visit by Western Australia’s Premier, Hon Roger Cook MLA, to India. This initiative reflects the growing cultural and creative links between the two regions, aiming to encourage further cultural exchange through the medium of cinema.

Vidya Balan’s Role as Chief Guest

Vidya Balan, known for her diverse roles and narratives, will officially open the festival. She has been associated with films that explore unique stories and women-led characters. Her involvement as Chief Guest signifies the festival’s commitment to bringing audiences together through Indian cinema, transcending languages, cultures, and regions.

Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM, the Festival Director, expressed excitement about the event. “Bringing the Indian Film Festival to Perth is a very special milestone for us. Having built platforms for Indian cinema in Melbourne and Sydney, we are delighted to now bring this celebration to Western Australia and connect with a new community of audiences and film lovers. Cinema has a remarkable ability to bring people together, transcend borders and create a deeper understanding of one another. We are thrilled to welcome Vidya Balan as the Chief Guest for our inaugural edition, and we look forward to creating a festival that celebrates the extraordinary diversity of Indian storytelling while building meaningful cultural connections between India and Western Australia,” she stated.

Celebrating Diversity in Indian Storytelling

The first edition of the Indian Film Festival of Perth aims to establish a platform for Indian cinema in Western Australia. It will bring together film enthusiasts, filmmakers, and members of the creative community. The program is set to showcase stories from various Indian languages, genres, and perspectives, while also providing opportunities for discussions, collaborations, and cultural exchange.

The launch of this festival adds another significant platform for Indian cinema in Australia. Organizers are eager to build connections between audiences and the film industry, highlighting the vast array of stories emerging from India.
