Sergio Gor Provides Update on India-US Trade Deal Amid Trump’s Sanctions Threat

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announced on Thursday that the two nations have made significant progress on their trade deal agenda, with negotiations advancing at an “incredible pace.” He contrasted the speed of these discussions with the lengthy negotiations for the India-EU trade pact, noting that a deal was reached just weeks after his arrival in India, while the EU talks took nearly two decades.

Gor also addressed the recent legislation imposing a 100% tariff on Russian gas and oil buyers, stating that President Donald Trump is expected to make a decision within the next 10 days. The law, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in the US Senate, grants the President the authority to impose sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas or aiding others in evading sanctions. However, Gor emphasized that these measures are not aimed at India or any specific country.

India-US Trade Deal: ‘Big Items Are Done’

Gor expressed optimism about the impending trade agreement between India and the US, stating that major components of the negotiations have been completed. He described the remaining issues as smaller details that could arise as discussions continue. The negotiations have been ongoing for approximately a year and a half, with Gor noting that the pace of talks has been favorable compared to other trade agreements.

He highlighted the rapid engagement since his arrival in India, contrasting it with the lengthy process of negotiating the EU trade deal. “Within three weeks of arriving here, we announced a trade deal,” Gor said, emphasizing the swift progress made in the discussions.

US Firms and Their Indian Presence

Gor pointed out the substantial opportunities for American businesses in India, citing the country’s market potential and favorable government policies towards foreign investment. He identified key sectors such as defense manufacturing, IT, data centers, and chip manufacturing as areas of collaboration between the two nations.

He remarked on the welcoming environment for US companies, stating, “You have a very pragmatic prime minister here that welcomes outside investment.” Gor noted that major American firms like Google, Microsoft, and Adobe are establishing data centers and chip manufacturing operations in India, creating jobs in both countries. He reiterated the mutual benefits of this collaboration, stating, “It is an incredible win-win situation.”
