Vande Bharat Express: ICF Launches First Train in 2019, RCF and MCF Set to Produce Semi-High Speed Train Sets by 2026

Vande Bharat Express trains are expanding their production capabilities, with the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala successfully testing its first 16-coach Vande Bharat Chair Car train set at speeds of 180 kilometers per hour. This marks a significant development as RCF joins the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, which has been the sole manufacturer of these trains until now. The high-speed trial took place on October 8, 2026, on the Mathura–Nagda section, under the supervision of the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS).
180 kmph Speed Test for RCF’s Vande Bharat
The CCRS inspection evaluated the trainset’s performance, operational efficiency, and adherence to safety standards. Successfully passing this inspection is a crucial milestone in the advancement of Vande Bharat trainsets. RCF Kapurthala is also responsible for producing coaches for other advanced train sets, including the Amrit Bharat. The factory has gained international recognition, exporting railway coaches to various countries in Asia and Africa, thereby enhancing India’s presence in the global railway market. In the fiscal year 2025–26, RCF Kapurthala achieved its highest-ever annual output, manufacturing 2,383 coaches.
Vande Bharat Express
The Vande Bharat Express, initially known as Train 18, was launched in 2019 between Delhi and Varanasi. This fully air-conditioned train set introduced several technological advancements to passenger services. Unlike traditional trains that require a separate locomotive, the Vande Bharat can reach speeds of 180 kmph independently. Its design allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, potentially reducing journey times by up to 20% on various routes.
The train features a range of passenger conveniences, including European-style seating, automatic doors, and GPS-enabled information systems. Its regenerative braking technology enhances energy efficiency, while semi-permanent couplers and improved suspension systems contribute to a smoother ride. The Vande Bharat also incorporates KAVACH, India’s Automatic Train Protection system, certified to Safety Integrity Level-4. The latest version, Vande Bharat 3.0, can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in approximately 52 seconds, offering reduced noise and vibration for an enhanced passenger experience.
