US Urges Immediate Ceasefire as Violent Clashes Continue into Third Day

The United States has urged Thailand and Cambodia to halt hostilities immediately as border clashes enter their third day, resulting in at least ten fatalities and displacing hundreds of thousands. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for both nations to adhere to de-escalation measures outlined in a peace agreement brokered by former President Donald Trump last October. Trump has also expressed his intention to intervene directly to stop the violence, which marks the most severe escalation since deadly clashes in July.

Escalating Violence and Casualties

The ongoing conflict has already claimed the lives of ten individuals, with seven casualties reported from Cambodia and three from Thailand. In response to the violence, Thai officials have evacuated over 400,000 residents from border areas, while Cambodian authorities have moved approximately 100,000 people to shelters. The Thai defense ministry described its military actions as “limited in scope and employed as a last option,” emphasizing the need for peace to ensure the safety of its citizens. Conversely, Cambodia has accused Thailand of launching aggressive military strikes targeting civilian institutions and sacred cultural sites, including historic temples along the disputed border.

Cambodia Withdraws from Southeast Asian Games

In light of the escalating tensions, Cambodia has announced its withdrawal from the Southeast Asian Games being hosted in Thailand. The Cambodian National Olympic Committee cited “serious concerns and requests” from athletes’ families as the reason for this decision, stating that it was not made lightly. This withdrawal underscores the significant impact of the ongoing conflict on regional events and the safety of participants.

International Calls for Restraint

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on both Thailand and Cambodia to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation. He highlighted the serious consequences of the conflict, including significant civilian casualties, damage to infrastructure, and widespread displacement. The century-old border dispute between the two nations has intensified, particularly since a rocket barrage from Cambodia into Thailand on July 24, which prompted retaliatory airstrikes from Thailand. This cycle of violence has led to multiple ceasefire agreements, yet tensions remain high.

Historical Context and Ongoing Tensions

The territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has persisted for over a century, dating back to the delineation of borders following the French occupation of Cambodia. The recent violence has spread across at least six provinces in northeastern Thailand and five provinces in northern and northwestern Cambodia. In response to the renewed fighting, several countries, including the UK, US, and Japan, have issued travel warnings for the border regions, reflecting growing international concern over the situation.
