India’s space sector is undergoing significant transformation, thanks to recent reforms. Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, highlighted these changes during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha. He stated that the reforms have unlocked India’s commercial potential in space. This article explores the role of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) in this evolving landscape and its achievements since its inception.
The Formation and Purpose of NSIL
NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) was established in March 2019 as a Public Sector Enterprise under the Department of Space. Its primary goal is to enhance the participation of Indian industries in space-related activities. NSIL serves as the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). By adopting a demand-driven approach, NSIL aims to carry out end-to-end commercial space business. This includes satellite launches, technology transfers, and providing various space-based services.
The establishment of NSIL marks a significant shift in India’s approach to space commercialization. Previously, ISRO handled most space activities. Now, NSIL is tasked with fostering collaboration between government and private sectors. This collaboration is crucial for building a robust space ecosystem in India. By engaging Indian industries, NSIL aims to boost domestic capabilities in satellite manufacturing and launch services. This initiative is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the country.
Achievements of NSIL
Since its inception, NSIL has made remarkable strides in the space sector. One of its first major projects was the GSAT-N1 communication satellite, launched on June 23, 2022. This satellite was designed to meet the Direct-To-Home (DTH) needs of Indian consumers. Following this success, NSIL launched its second communication satellite, GSAT-N2, on November 19, 2024. This satellite focuses on providing broadband services and is currently undergoing testing.
As of now, NSIL has successfully launched 124 international and three Indian customer satellites using various launch vehicles, including PSLV, LVM3, and SSLV. The company operates 15 in-orbit communication satellites, catering to diverse needs such as DTH, VSAT, and broadband services. Additionally, NSIL has begun disseminating Earth Observation satellite data to global customers since May 2023. These achievements underscore NSIL’s commitment to enhancing India’s presence in the global space market.
Financial Performance and Future Plans
NSIL has demonstrated strong financial performance since its establishment. The company reported a revenue of โน3,142.26 crores for the fiscal year 2022-23, showcasing significant growth compared to previous years. The revenue from operations has steadily increased, reflecting the growing demand for space-based services. NSIL’s profit before tax has also shown a positive trend, indicating its successful business model.
Looking ahead, NSIL plans to expand its commercial space business further. Dr. Singh announced that NSIL will undertake its third demand-driven communication satellite mission, GSAT-N3, aimed at meeting the S-Band communication needs of Indian governmental users. This satellite is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, NSIL has signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the end-to-end production of five Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV). The first fully Indian industry-manufactured PSLV is anticipated to launch in the second quarter of 2025.
