Understanding the Impact of the Iran Conflict on Oil and Gas Prices
Global oil prices have experienced a significant surge this week, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The situation intensified following major military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, raising concerns about potential long-term disruptions to energy supplies. As a result, oil and gas prices have soared across international markets, prompting fears of a broader energy crisis.
Oil Prices Reach New Heights
The price of oil has seen a remarkable increase, with U.S. crude oil settling at $90.90 per barrel, reflecting a staggering 36% rise from just a week ago. On Friday alone, prices jumped over 12%, marking the highest level since late 2022. Since the beginning of the year, U.S. crude prices have surged nearly 60%. Meanwhile, Brent crude, the global benchmark, surpassed $94 per barrel, climbing more than 9% to its highest point since late 2023. Analysts attribute this sharp increase to growing fears that the conflict involving Iran could lead to a prolonged energy supply crisis, further destabilizing global markets.
Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz
The ongoing conflict has severely impacted shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil trade. Approximately 20 million barrels of oil per day typically transit through this narrow waterway. However, several oil tankers have become stranded in the region due to heightened fears of missile and drone attacks. Reports indicate that the conflict has also caused damage to oil and gas facilities throughout the Middle East, disrupting supply flows. Notably, Kuwait has begun reducing production at some oil fields due to a lack of storage capacity for its crude oil. The situation escalated further when Iran launched retaliatory strikes, including a drone attack on the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia and assaults on a major refinery and a liquefied natural gas facility in Qatar. These attacks have temporarily halted about 20% of the world’s LNG supply, exacerbating the crisis.
Impact on Fuel Prices and Consumer Costs
The surge in oil prices is already translating into higher fuel costs for consumers and businesses. In the United States, the price of regular gasoline rose to $3.32 per gallon, an 11% increase from the previous week. Diesel prices have also climbed 15%, reaching $4.33 per gallon. Energy markets in Europe and Asia, which heavily depend on Middle Eastern oil, have been particularly affected. Diesel prices in Europe have doubled, while jet fuel prices in Asia have skyrocketed nearly 200% due to supply disruptions. The conflict has also shaken financial markets, with major U.S. stock indexes experiencing declines. The S&P 500 fell more than 1.3%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 453 points, marking its worst week since April 2025.
Future Outlook and Government Response
In light of the escalating situation, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that military operations against Iran could extend for several weeks, emphasizing the United States’ capability for a prolonged engagement. He ruled out negotiations with Iran unless it agrees to significant concessions. To stabilize maritime trade, Trump announced a plan to insure losses of up to $20 billion for ships operating in the Gulf region, aiming to restore confidence among shipping companies. However, experts caution that financial guarantees may not address the underlying security concerns. Amy Jaffe, director of the Energy, Climate Justice and Sustainability Lab at New York University, highlighted that shipping companies remain apprehensive about security threats, emphasizing the need for credible counter-terrorism solutions to alleviate the current bottleneck at the Strait of Hormuz.
