UK and India Launch STEM Training Initiative

The Science Museum Group (SMG) in the UK and India’s National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) have joined forces to introduce the ‘STEM Engagement and Learning’ program. This initiative aims to train 50 educators and museum professionals from 14 Indian states in effective STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) engagement techniques. Supported by the UK Government’s GREAT Britain and Northern Ireland campaign, the program combines online workshops with an immersive six-day visit to London for selected participants.

Program Overview and Objectives

The ‘STEM Engagement and Learning’ program is designed to enhance the skills of teachers and museum professionals in engaging students with STEM subjects. With over three decades of experience in STEM training, the Science Museum Group has developed a curriculum that emphasizes interactive and hands-on learning. Participants will learn best practices in audience research and collections management, equipping them with innovative methods to inspire students in STEM fields.

The initiative includes a series of online workshops leading up to a six-day immersive experience in London for 20 selected participants. This unique opportunity allows educators to gain insights from experts and explore effective strategies for engaging students in STEM learning. The program aims to foster a collaborative environment where knowledge and skills can be shared, ultimately enhancing the quality of science education in India.

Press Conference Highlights

A press conference was held at the National Science Centre in Delhi to announce the program’s objectives and outcomes. The event featured notable attendees, including Dr. Rama Jayasunder, NCSM Society Member; Mr. Samarendra Kumar, Deputy Director General of NCSM; Mr. Simon McNorton, Regional Director of the UK Science and Technology Network; and Mr. Jack Landers, a representative from the UK Science Museum Group.

During the conference, Mr. Samarendra Kumar discussed the significance of past collaborations between SMG and NCSM, emphasizing the importance of ongoing cooperation to enhance science education. Dr. Jayasunder highlighted a recent initiative aimed at increasing female participation in STEM activities, noting that 50 female teachers were part of the workshop delegation. She also stressed the need to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to create immersive and inclusive learning experiences.

Mr. McNorton reaffirmed the commitment of both organizations to continue supporting STEM education and engagement initiatives in India, ensuring a sustained partnership for future programs.

Transformative Experiences of Educators

Two teachers who participated in the workshop at SMG shared their transformative experiences during the press conference. They emphasized the importance of teachers’ perspectives in shaping students’ understanding of the world. The workshop provided them with new methodologies and approaches, significantly enhancing their ability to create engaging STEM learning experiences.

Shri Rakesh Tripathi, an Education Officer at NSC Delhi, also reflected on his learnings from the workshop. He noted how the experience broadened his understanding of integrating teachers into museum activities, allowing for more effective educational programming. His insights highlighted the potential for museums to serve as dynamic learning spaces that complement traditional classroom education.
