NCST Internship Program Empowers Scholars on Tribal Governance
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has wrapped up its Internship Programme 2026 with a valedictory ceremony at its headquarters in Lok Nayak Bhawan, New Delhi. This month-long initiative aimed to provide young scholars with hands-on experience related to the Commission’s constitutional mandate, as well as insight into tribal governance, public policy, and the legal framework surrounding the welfare of Scheduled Tribes.
Twenty interns participated in the program, engaging in expert-led lectures and interactive sessions with senior NCST officials and subject matter experts. The topics covered included constitutional protections for Scheduled Tribes, the Forest Rights Act of 2006, the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act of 1996, tribal development strategies, and the governance structure of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes. Furthermore, the interns acquired practical knowledge through direct interactions with various Commission departments, grievance redressal processes, quasi-judicial functions, research tasks, and policy initiatives, complemented by a field visit.
Hands-On Learning Experience
Each intern participated in an essential academic component of the program, delivering presentations on subjects related to tribal affairs, governance, or constitutional provisions. Participants also engaged in in-depth research assignments on significant topics, such as the Fifth and Sixth Schedule areas and various tribal welfare programs, culminating in the presentation of group research reports.
The valedictory session was led by Dr. Asha Lakra, an esteemed member of the NCST, alongside Sh. Prashant Kumar Singh, Secretary, Sh. Amit Nirmal, Joint Secretary, and other high-ranking officials. During the ceremony, the dignitaries celebrated the interns for their dedication and academic contributions throughout the program. They encouraged the young scholars to apply their newly acquired knowledge of tribal issues in their future studies and careers, stressing the importance of advocating for the rights and development of Scheduled Tribes.

The successful conclusion of the Internship Programme is a vital milestone in the NCST’s ongoing mission to engage young minds in discussions surrounding Scheduled Tribes. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the constitutional, legal, and policy frameworks that safeguard tribal rights, promote their welfare, and support inclusive development. By fostering informed academic discussions and heightening public awareness, the NCST seeks to inspire the next generation to be more sensitive toward tribal matters.
