In a groundbreaking advancement for digital healthcare in India, the Scan and Register Service, previously known as Scan and Share, has achieved a remarkable milestone of 25 crore outpatient department (OPD) registrations since its launch in October 2022. This service, part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), is revolutionizing the OPD registration process, making it quicker and more user-friendly for patients nationwide.
The impressive milestone signifies a rapid adoption of digital health services across India, reflecting the increasing reliance on ABHA-enabled health solutions. The Scan and Register feature allows patients to effortlessly register at hospitals by scanning a unique QR code displayed at participating facilities. By doing so, they can subsequently share their ABHA profile after giving consent, facilitating instant OPD registration without the hassle of manual forms or waiting in long lines.
This revolution in healthcare registration not only streamlines the process, reducing waiting times at registration counters, but also enhances operational efficiency for healthcare providers. The achievement of 25 crore transactions showcases the growing confidence in India’s digital health ecosystem among the citizens and health professionals alike. Since its inception, Scan and Register has quickly become one of the most widely embraced digital health services in the country, enabling hassle-free OPD registration for millions.
Widespread Adoption Across Healthcare Facilities
The Scan and Register service is currently active in over 30,800 healthcare facilities across 36 States and Union Territories, reaching 756 districts throughout India. This includes 24,323 public healthcare institutions and 6,481 private facilities. The broad implementation of this service highlights collaborative efforts between the Central Government, state authorities, healthcare providers, and digital solution companies, all working together to enhance digital healthcare delivery under the ABDM.
On average, approximately 400,000 patients utilize the Scan and Register service daily for OPD registration, demonstrating the growing trust in digital healthcare. This service significantly simplifies the hospital registration process for various demographic groups, including women, senior citizens, mothers-to-be, and patients needing frequent hospital visits.
Leading States and Healthcare Institutions
Bihar leads the nation with over 7.30 crore transactions, followed by Uttar Pradesh (4.09 crore), Andhra Pradesh (3.38 crore), and Jammu & Kashmir (1.39 crore). Among government healthcare institutions, AIIMS New Delhi tops the list, with more than 54.29 lakh registrations, as AIIMS Bhopal (29.10 lakh), AIIMS Bhubaneswar (23.93 lakh), AIIMS Patna (19.62 lakh), and AIIMS Raipur (18.63 lakh) follow closely behind. These hospitals exemplify the successful integration of ABDM-enabled services into everyday healthcare delivery.
Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Authority, commented on this milestone achievement, emphasizing the growing trust placed by both citizens and healthcare providers in India’s digital health framework. He stated, “By improving the OPD registration process, Scan and Register significantly enhances patient convenience, while also allowing healthcare facilities to boost their operational efficiency. This progress illustrates the transformative potential of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission in creating an interoperable, secure, and citizen-centric healthcare system for all.”
